I know, from reading some of your comments, how much you all are really getting into the “apron thing” and how some of the vintage styles really hold a special nostalgia for you of times spent with your Mom watching her cook, or times spent with your Grandmother. Aprons are by nature, I really think, a tie with our pasts. If they weren’t why would there even be such figures of speech as, “cut the apron strings…” a phrase that is pregnant with meaning and fraught with all sorts of emotions, whether good or bad.

No one has captured the history of the apron, I think, as well as EllynAnne Geisel, owner of Apron Memories. EllynAnne has taken what to many is just an article of clothing to be thrown on the minute before cooking something particularly splattery and has unwrapped for us the history and the rich emotional significance that a simple piece of womanly attire can elicit.

Not only has EllynAnne published book, called The Apron Book on the topic of aprons, she has won an Independant Publisher’s award for it! EllynAnne is the writer and apron curator for a traveling exhibit known as Apron Chronicles: A Patchwork of American Recollections.

All of EllynAnne’s apron designs are interpretations of old patterns and are inspired by the stories of the contributors to Apron Chronicles. So when you win this contest you are getting not just a vintage style apron but also a story. Each of EllynAnne’s aprons comes with the story of its namesake.

This cheerful half apron is called the “Deni.”

Here is the “Mary.”

This real woman’s apron is called the “Mama Mia.”

The WINNER of this contest will receive their choice between the Mama Mia and the Mary.

  1. This is another of the sites that I can’t just choose one favorite! I like the Deni and the Mama Mia. I think the Cheye is adorable too. If I don’t win any of the aprons this week, I will have to come back to Apron Memories and buy one. Or two.

  2. I don’t have to look at the site to know that the “Mary” is my fav. I also like the Smoochie.

  3. I like the “Karen” apron the best, I think, but I have to say, the “Smoochie” is pretty darn cute, too!
