Mary has always been the hero in this story to me. Her character came to mind many times as I have labored to beautify the homes God has given us by his grace. And her tenacity and belief in her husband and his devotion to his calling and community has always been a huge inspiration to me.

She is one of the fiercest and most powerful movie heroines to me because she willingly absorbs the costs of her husband’s “lowly” calling and she continually reminds him that it is worth his investment, worth his love, worth his life even if he were never to experience a day of wealth or special honor. To all my friends out there who have stood through some truly unbelievable storms because you have promised to love someone til the day you die, watch this movie again… and keep standing. You are not laboring in vain.

2 Corinthians 4:16-17

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
